He also held positions as Vice Chairman of the School Board of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and as Chairman of the AMC's Standing Committee.
In 2015, he was appointed Chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA), where he oversaw significant urban planning and infrastructure projects.
Patel entered state-level politics in 2017, winning the Ghatlodia seat in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly by a record margin. He succeeded Anandiben Patel, a former Chief Minister of Gujarat, in this constituency.
On September 13, 2021, following the resignation of Vijay Rupani, Patel was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP legislative party and sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He became the first Chief Minister from the Kadva Patidar community.
In the 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections, under Patel's leadership, the BJP secured a historic victory, winning 156 out of 182 seats—the highest ever for any party in the state's history. He was sworn in for a second term on December 12, 2022.
