Jung Hoseok, known as J-Hope in BTS, born 18 February 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea, is one of BTS's three lead rappers and the group's dance leader. His name "Hope" reflects his consistently described role as the group's emotional energy.

His Parents

Both of J-Hope's parents have been kept deliberately private. His father is reportedly a Korean literature teacher.

His Sister: Jung Jiwoo

Jung Jiwoo, born 1991, is J-Hope's elder sister and a fashion entrepreneur — her brand Mejiwoo has become a substantial Korean fashion business. She has occasionally appeared on Korean variety television.

His Solo Career

Hope World (March 2018) — his solo mixtape, was the first BTS solo project to reach the US Billboard 200's top 40. Jack in the Box (July 2022) — his official solo album. Hope on the Street Vol. 1 (March 2024) — his second album.

J-Hope was the second BTS member to enlist (April 2023). He was discharged in October 2024.

What the Jung Family Story Teaches Us

A literature-teacher father. A homemaker mother. An elder sister who built her own fashion brand. A son who took up street dance as a teenager and became the dance leader of one of the most-watched groups in modern music.

For every family — large or small, famous or otherwise — the J-Hope story carries the same lesson. When two siblings build careers in different creative industries simultaneously, both contribute to the family's record. The Mejiwoo fashion brand is as much a part of the Jung family tree as J-Hope's music. Write both down.
