  • Wife: Lata Eknath Shinde
    Lata has been a steadfast partner throughout Eknath Shinde's journey, from his early days as an auto-rickshaw driver to his rise in politics. She played a crucial role in supporting him during personal tragedies and political challenges. 

  • Children:

    • Dr. Shrikant Shinde: Their surviving son, Shrikant, is an orthopedic surgeon and a Member of Parliament representing the Kalyan constituency since 2014.

    • Dipesh and Shubhada Shinde: In a tragic incident on June 2, 2000, their son Dipesh (aged 11) and daughter Shubhada (aged 8) drowned in a boating accident near their native village. This event deeply affected the family. 

  • Daughter-in-law: Vrushali Shrikant Shinde

🧒 Early Life & Background

Born on February 9, 1964, in Dare Tamb village, Mahabaleshwar taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra, Shinde belongs to the Maratha community. His family later moved to Thane in search of better opportunities. Due to financial constraints, he left school after the 11th grade and worked as an auto-rickshaw driver to support his family. In 2020, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University. 

🏛️ Political Journey

  • 1980s: Introduced to politics by Anand Dighe, then Thane Shiv Sena President. Shinde began his political career leading Shiv Sena's agitation in the Wagle Estate area, emerging as a prominent labor leader. 

  • 1997: Elected as a corporator in the Thane Municipal Corporation.

  • 2001: Appointed as Leader of the House in the Thane Municipal Corporation.

  • 2004: Elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Thane constituency.

  • 2009 onwards: Representing the Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency, he has been re-elected in 2009, 2014, and 2019. 

  • 2014–2019: Served as Cabinet Minister for Public Works (Public Undertakings) and Urban Development in Maharashtra.

⚡ 2022 Political Crisis & Chief Ministership

In June 2022, Shinde led a significant rebellion within the Shiv Sena, opposing the party's alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. He, along with several MLAs, moved to Surat and later to Guwahati, expressing dissatisfaction with the MVA alliance. This led to the resignation of then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Subsequently, on June 30, 2022, Shinde was sworn in as the Chief Minister, with BJP's Devendra Fadnavis as his Deputy. 

🏛️ Tenure as Chief Minister (2022–2024)

During his tenure, Shinde's government was a coalition comprising the Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the NCP. He emphasized infrastructure development, urban planning, and public welfare schemes. His leadership was marked by efforts to strengthen the state's economy and improve administrative efficiency.

🏛️ Transition to Deputy Chief Minister

On December 5, 2024, following political realignments, Devendra Fadnavis assumed the role of Chief Minister, and Shinde transitioned to the position of Deputy Chief Minister. Despite the change, Shinde continues to play a pivotal role in the state's governance and remains a significant figure in Maharashtra politics.

🏛️ Leadership of Shiv Sena

In February 2023, Shinde was recognized as the leader of the Shiv Sena by the Election Commission of India, following a dispute over the party's leadership and symbol. This decision was a significant setback for the faction led by Uddhav Thackeray.
