The Koch dynasty of Cooch Behar ruled the small northern Bengal kingdom from 1510 to 1949. The Family's Roots: The Koch Dynasty

Founded around 1510 by Maharaja Biswa Singha, the kingdom ruled a substantial area of what is now North Bengal and parts of Assam. The dynasty signed the Instrument of Accession to India on 28 August 1949.

The Last Reigning Maharajas

Maharaja Nripendra Narayan (1862 – 1911) modernised the state in the late 19th century. His wife Maharani Sunity Devi (1864 – 1932) was the first Indian princess to write a published English-language autobiography.

Maharaja Jagaddipendra Narayan (1915 – 1970) was the last reigning Maharaja (1922 – 1949). He was the elder brother of Princess Gayatri Devi.

The Most Famous Member: Maharani Gayatri Devi

Gayatri Devi, born 23 May 1919 in London (during her parents' UK visit), was the third daughter of the family. She married Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur on 9 May 1940 as his third wife — becoming Maharani of Jaipur and one of the most internationally visible Indian princesses of the 20th century.

She was a three-time elected MP from Jaipur for the Swatantra Party (1962, 1967, 1971). She was briefly imprisoned during the Emergency by Indira Gandhi's government. She died on 29 July 2009 in Jaipur.
