👨‍👩‍👦 Family Background

  • Father: Victor Wong served as a warrant officer in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). ​

  • Mother: Yeo Huay Lan worked as a childcare teacher. 

The family resided in a five-room HDB flat in the Jurong West neighborhood of Singapore. 

Kahchun grew up in a Mandarin-speaking household and discovered Western classical music during his time at Jurong Primary School. 

Additionally, he has Japanese heritage on his maternal side, which contributed to his fluency in Japanese. ​


🎶 Musical Journey

Kahchun's musical journey began when he joined his school's brass band at the age of 7, where he was assigned the cornet. ​

His parents, though not musicians themselves, supported his decision to pursue music professionally. ​

After completing his studies at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore, he furthered his conducting studies in Berlin.

In 2016, he gained international recognition by winning the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition. ​

🎓 Early Life & Education

Raised in a Mandarin-speaking household in Jurong West, Singapore, Wong's parents—Victor Wong, a Singapore Armed Forces warrant officer, and Yeo Huay Lan, a childcare teacher—supported his early musical interests. He began playing the trumpet in school bands and, during his national service, performed with the SAF military band. A lip injury during this time led him to explore composition and conducting. He co-founded the Asian Contemporary Ensemble in 2010, focusing on works by Singaporean and Asian composers.​In 2011, Wong received the prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to study opera and orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, Germany, where he earned his master's degree in 2014. 


🎼 Career Highlights

  • 2016: Became the first Asian to win the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Bamberg, Germany. ​

  • 2018–2022: Served as Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. ​

  • 2019: Conducted the New York Philharmonic's Lunar New Year concert and was awarded the Order of Merit by the Federal President of Germany for his contributions to Singaporean-German cultural relations. ​

  • 2023–Present: Appointed Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. 

  • 2024–2025 Season: Set to become the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of The Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, succeeding Sir Mark Elder. ​
