In the modern history of Indian state politics, no Chief Minister has remained in office as long without interruption as Naveen Patnaik has. The Cuttack-born son of the legendary freedom-fighter and Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, who founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in 1997, became Chief Minister of Odisha on 5 March 2000, and held that office continuously for 24 years and 92 days before stepping down after his coalition's 2024 election defeat — is one of the most consequential regional leaders in modern Indian history. He served his fifth consecutive term as CM until 12 June 2024. Behind every electoral victory sat a family with two genuinely separate worlds — a Delhi political-celebrity household, and a son who chose to leave that life entirely for two decades before returning to lead Odisha for a quarter-century.
The Family's Roots: The Karan Community of Odisha
The Patnaik family belongs to the Karan community of Odisha — a traditional administrative caste — with roots in coastal Odisha. Naveen was born in Cuttack on 16 October 1946.
His Father: Biju Patnaik
Biju Patnaik (5 March 1916 – 17 April 1997) was a legendary figure: a freedom fighter, pilot, two-time Chief Minister of Odisha (1961–63, 1990–95), and Union Minister in V. P. Singh's government. He had famously flown clandestine missions during the 1947 Indonesian independence struggle and was conferred Indonesia's Bhumi Putra honour by Sukarno. He died in 1997.
His Mother: Gyan Patnaik
Gyan Patnaik née Gyan Devi was an Odia social activist and intellectual — herself the daughter of a Bengali nationalist family.
His Siblings
Naveen has two elder siblings:
Prem Patnaik, the eldest, lives in Delhi and has built his own quiet career outside politics.
Gita Mehta (28 May 1943 – 16 September 2023) was Naveen's elder sister and a major Indian-English author (Karma Cola, A River Sutra, Snakes and Ladders). She was married to the legendary publisher Sonny Mehta (Knopf), and the couple lived in New York for decades. She died in 2023.
Naveen's Pre-Political Life
Before politics, Naveen led an entirely separate life as a member of the New York and Delhi social-and-arts circles. He was close friends with Mick Jagger, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and other figures of the international art world. He wrote three books on Indian heritage (A Second Paradise, A Desert Kingdom, The Garden of Life) and ran an Indian-handicrafts boutique in Delhi.
He entered politics only after his father's death in 1997, succeeding him as MP from the Aska constituency.
His Personal Life
Naveen has never married and has no children. He lives alone at Naveen Niwas, his official Bhubaneswar residence, where his retired-state-service personnel and a small set of long-time aides constitute his daily household.

What the Patnaik Family Story Teaches Us
A freedom-fighter father who was Chief Minister twice. An intellectual mother. A sister who became a global English-language Indian author and married into one of New York publishing's most legendary houses. A brother who lives privately in Delhi. A son who left India for two decades to run a handicrafts boutique and write art books before returning at fifty to enter politics and ending up the longest-serving Indian CM of his lifetime.
For every family — large or small, famous or otherwise — the Patnaik story carries the same lesson. The pre-history of a famous person is often as interesting as the famous part. The two decades Naveen spent in New York and Delhi, before he ever stood for office, are still part of his family story. Write down what each family member did before the part they became known for. The full life is the full tree.
