In July 2023, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) initiated an investigation into Iswaran's dealings with Malaysian billionaire Ong Beng Seng. Iswaran was charged with receiving valuable items as a public servant and obstructing justice. He was the first Singaporean minister to be prosecuted under Section 165 of the Penal Code since the country's independence .
In January 2024, Iswaran resigned from his ministerial roles and his seat in Parliament following corruption charges. He was accused of receiving valuable items from a property tycoon and obstructing justice. In September 2024, he pleaded guilty to charges under Section 165 of the Penal Code and was sentenced to 12 months in prison .
